I’m Back.
Blog! I’ve missed you!
I am sorry I left you. The fact is, I got busy. I’ve been doing well with my freelancing work (and am very grateful for this), and mixed with enjoying summertime in the city, weekends away, and some travel, I have neglected AWR. I hope to post more regularly, because I miss writing here.
Here is some of what I’ve been up to:
I’ve read stuff!
I believe I left off with reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. Folks, it would have taken me one hundred years to get through this novel. I understand that it’s a classic and that people love it. I also know that I’ve tackled far more daunting books. But I couldn’t do it this time. I didn’t have the focus, the stamina, or the commitment to get through it. I put it down about ¼ to ½ way through. I would still like to read it, and I will try again in a few years.
Like many good things in life, I believe that you are meant to read different works at different times. There is a reason why you read a book one year and love it, then read it a few years later and it just doesn’t have the same effect. This was not the time for me to read this novel. That time will come, but it is not now.
I’ve been reading other things instead:
The Goldfinch by Donna Tart
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for 2014 and one of the ‘hot’ books of the year, this novel was fantastic and complex.
Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris
You’ve probably seen Sedaris’s latest work on store displays and airport kiosks. Always funny, Sedaris proves that he’s the one to read when you need a pick-me-up. Or when you’re on vacation. Or before bed. Or, well, anytime.
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
This one, I’m not so hot on. I’ve loved Jane Austen since college and I get where the novel was leading, but it just fell short.
Two out of three ain’t bad. Reviews on all these bad boys are coming soon!
I’ve enjoyed NYC
